About US
History
With new waves of African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees settling in Philadelphia in the early 2000, 15 grassroots organizations, representing 15 African and Caribbean nationalities convened at the Balch Institute of Philadelphia, to launch the Coalition of African Communities (AFRICOM) in May 2001. The fifteen nationalities included: Ghana, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Liberia, Haiti, Mali, Sudan, Senegal, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Mauretania, Sierra Leone, Togo,
The launching convention was the culmination of months of organizing and collective power-building to address the systemic social and economic issues that African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees face in the Greater Philadelphia area. In 2003, AFRICOM was incorporated with the Department of State of Pennsylvania.

WHY AFRICOM ?
Because AFRICOM matters and because we have a unique approach to addressing the issues that the communities we serve face. Our service delivery model focuses primarily on collective power building, community organizing, and community-based participatory research, centering on the experience of African and Caribbean immigrants and community leaders.
In addition, although AFRICOM serves primarily African and Caribbean immigrants, our services are available to all regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, and social status, and zip codes.
Refugees
More than 90% of the individuals and families we serve are immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Caribbean Islands. Many live in the Greater Philadelphia area. In the Philadelphia region, studies show that the number of immigrants and refugees from Africa increased more than any other immigrant groups between 2000 and 2016. In Pennsylvania, 8% of foreign-born are from Africa and 14% of foreign-born are from any of the Caribbean Islands.
In the county of Philadelphia, African and Caribbean immigrants make about 5% of total population.
